Movie Disappointment

I love to read.  I am always in the middle of some kind of book or another.  When I have an interest in reading a book and if there is a movie about it, I won't watch the movie first because if I do, I actually loose interest in the book and I won't finish it because I know how it is going to end.....the only exception is my Jane Austen Collection...I read those books every year and can never lose interest.

Have you ever read a book and then watched the movie only to be disappointed in the way that they portray things in the movie??  I have just watched a few of the Jane Austen movies from Masterpiece Classic on PBS and I am severely disappointed in the way that they have rushed the plots to make the movies fit into their time frame.  I say that if you can't do a Jane Austen book justice, don't do it at all. (I am a die hard Jane Austen fan)  Just tonight, I finished watching Masterpiece Classics's interpretation of Persuasion.  I can't believe the way that they rushed the end of the book and the way that Anne found out about Mr. Elliot.  Mr. Elliot had told her that he knew of her many years ago and it is left hanging in the movie as to how he knew about her.  How and why did they have Henrietta tell Anne about Mr. Elliot at the end??  How would Henrietta of known??  I almost don't even know why they introduced Mrs. Smith if they were going to eliminate the important role she plays in the book.  Where is the part where Mrs. Clay elopes with Mr. Elliot?? I read nowhere in the book where she is promised to be his mistress after Anne marries him. It was to be agreed upon the marriage of Anne to Mr. Elliot that Mrs. Clay won't marry Sir Elliot, nothing more. There are other areas that really bothered me such as the fall that Anne takes when they take their walk to the Haters, the way that the concert scene plays out, and the way that Anne finds out about Louisa's engagement to Benwick.  I guess that it makes a good movie to those who have never read the books, but for me, I would rather pass or watch the great movies that BBC put out many years ago with Ann Firbank and Bryan Marshall.  One good thing I can say about the movies in the Masterpiece Classic is that they have a wonderful cast and the soundtrack is absolutely lovely.

I first watched a Masterpiece Classic movie on PBS last year and fell in love with it so much that my family bought it for me for Christmas.  It was Charles Dickens Little Dorrit.  Now if I go and read that book, am I going to be sorely disappointed in one of my favorite movies??

Right now, I am in the process of reading The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and I would like to watch the movie afterwards, but I don't want to be disappointed again.....I guess we will just have to see what happens.

So, have you ever read a book and been disappointed in the way the movie turned out, or are you one that watches a movie and then reads the book??   Please share your experiences.

Hugs,
